The Koukkunen trail is part of Peuran polku, which is waymarked with orange paint marks on the trees. There are also signposts at the trail junctions. The round trip from the trailhead to Koukkunen and back is about 2 kilometres.
Difficulty
The terrain on the Koukkunen trail is rocky, which makes the route fairly demanding. However, the path runs close to the road, so it makes a great day trip for families with children too.
Starting point
To reach the trailhead, first drive about 8 km from Reisjärvi to Mäntyperä, then turn onto Kuivajärventie. Follow Kuivajärventie for about 6 km to reach the trailhead at the Raatejärvi car park. There is also a second car park just over a kilometre further on (Kuivajärventie 699).
In winter you can also reach Koukkunen across the bog on skis or snowshoes.
Facilities
On the shore of Koukkunen pond you'll find a kota hut, an outdoor campfire site, a dry toilet and firewood. You can also stay the night in the Koukkunen kota.
