The slightly blunt axe bites into a birch log, and the pile of firewood quickly grows. Soon there's a fire in the sauna stove and in the cabin's wood burner, and a gentle warmth spreads all around. Have I chopped enough wood for the night?

The sweat slowly dries on the back of my shirt, and at last I have time to look around. The new reservable hut at Saarijärvi really is splendid. It's a lovely place to spend time, whether in the middle of a Peuran polku trek or simply for its own sake, as I'm doing now. You could easily go fishing too, as the cabin has its own boat – maybe next time I'll leave the camera gear behind and bring my fishing tackle instead.
As the sky slowly darkens, the clouds drift away and soon the first stars appear – I wonder if that first bright dot is the planet Jupiter?
Soon I need to hurry to my shooting position, as a faint green glow is appearing in the sky. The starry sky is absolutely stunning, and it's soothing to stand on the lakeshore listening to the quiet chatter of swans on a nearby pond.
The northern sky fills with the swift dance of the northern lights – even red is clearly visible to the naked eye. No rush to go to bed now.
A night in the forest is always an unforgettable experience. Why not give it a try yourself?
